Fun Side of Tech

Freaknik 2013 Tournament Disc

Starting as a type of baking company, Frisbie was originally called the Frisbie
Pie Company. The origin of the sport came from students at Yale who either
threw the tin pie container at each other while yelling “Frisbie.” After World
War II, Walter Frederick Morrison took this and created the Frisbee, and with
the help of Wham-O, the Frisbee was mass-produced. At Georgia Tech, Frisbee
is a sport enjoyed by many people on campus whether it is at a pick-up game,
intramurals, or a club team. It is the spotlight of tournaments in Georgia Tech.
Students in housing face-off against other housing buildings and fraternities
and sororities battle each other to show which is better. There are only a few
discs with this particular design that showing the tradition in Georgia Tech
and celebrating the Frisbee.

Roman/Greek Chess Set

Each square is carefully calculated to fit with one another, each filled with a
myriad of thoughts. Art is a curiosity upon itself, telling something different
to each person, yet it’s a science at the same time. Which lines connect to one
another? What draws a person towards it? What changes one’s perspective?
All of these questions can be interpreted as artistic or as scientific; it all
depends upon you. Each one of us is a square that makes up another part of
the art known as Georgia Tech and what we appear as to others is constantly
different. They are ultimately the judges of our “art” but we are the deciding
factors in it, each one of us contributing something different and unique to this
masterpiece.

Admiral Ackbar Figurine

“It’s a trap!” Admiral Ackbar immortalized these words in the movie
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. A member of the amphibious species Mon
Calamari, Ackbar is a commander of the Rebel Alliance. Even though he was
a supporting role in Return of the Jedi, he became a prominent character, and
he was actually named as number 16 in the 1998 list of “Top 20 Star Wars
Characters.” We here at Tech embrace our nerdiness, and that means showing
our love for everything Star Wars. This particular figurine belongs to a student
at Tech. When he was younger, he collected all the figurines from the Power
of the Force II line. He was only missing one figurine – Admiral Ackbar. It was
first produced by the Hasbro Company in 1997 and was only in a total of 25
waves starting in 1995 and ending in 2000. His parents were able to find this
one about two years ago and gave it to him for Christmas.

GA Tech Gangnam Style

Gangnam Style is a dance craze started by South Korean pop musician PSY.
It took off during 2012 and became the first video on YouTube to reach one
billion views. The video is based on the lavish lifestyle of the Gangnam district
in Seoul, South Korea. Gangnam Style's viral success has spread around the
world and thousands have made their own version of it. We at Georgia Tech
are made this version shortly after Gangnam Style took off in the USA. While
remaining true to the original's style, Tech's version incorporates our mascot,
Buzz, with copious amounts of “stinger” shaking and cheerleaders. Despite
our reputation for being studious and hard working, we know how to let go
of ourselves and be wild and crazy. We don't necessarily act like the people
in the video, but it is important to remember that Tech is not only a place for
studying and learning but also a place to lavish in the experience that only
Tech’s rich culture can provide.

Golfing Flask

A rather curious instrument created by man is nicknamed the golfing flask.
Fully equipped with several golfing supplies, such as golfing tees, ball marks,
and a divot fixer, this state-of-the art device is ready to meet all of your
golfing/drinking needs. Now, some of us like to drink and some of us like
to golf. But, when we combine those two together, we either wind up with
an ingenious invention or a disastrous situation. For the time being, we’ve
decided to focus on the more successful side of the combination. As long as
you don’t imagine the tragic golfing accidents that have surely resulted from
this flask before it reached our inquisitively outstretched hands, you can
truly appreciate the ingenious design of the flask. It definitely makes it easier
to celebrate after a hole-in-one. Also, take a moment to notice the letters
engraved on the back. What do you think they stand for?

Humans vs Zombies

Humans vs. Zombies, has been played at over a 1,000 locations in six different
continents since its debut in 2005 at Goucher College. And we at Georgia Tech
are no strangers to this crazy game of cat and mouse. The ultimate symbol
of gameplay, which can either indicate a friend or a foe, is none other than
the yellow bandana. Hence, this exhibit represents a very fun side of Tech
that we can all appreciate. It has become a form of recreation that we can
look forward to every semester. A game played by the daring, I am certain
it has resulted in a great deal of stories to be told, and laughs to be had.
When attending a school as challenging as ours, it’s nice to know that there’s
something that can help to ease the tension. Perhaps best of all is the fact that
you don’t need any prerequisites and everyone can play. Will you be brave
enough to sport one of these, next semester?

Lacrosse Stick

When people walk into a museum they are immediately attracted to their
interests. Whether it be historical artifacts or works of art, a person’s eye will
be caught by something unique, an item that makes a person question, “Why is
this here?” Cue: a torn up book. Tearing a book can be an outlet for students in
multiple ways. Many students at Tech have probably wanted to tear up a book
at some point in their career. However, being that books are so expensive, few
venture to actually do it. Well here is your chance. Go ahead and rip a page out
for all the times you wish you could have done it.
